How to Play Fib®
learn in 90 seconds!
––––– 1 –––––
Shuffle the deck a few times! Then, everyone draws five cards.
Figure out who the smartest player is. That player goes first as the Storyteller.
Each round, the new Storyteller may discard one card from their hand and draw a new one, if they wish.
––––– 2 –––––
Choosing three cards from their hand, the Storyteller places them in the Storyboard in sequence, stitched together by the words BUT and SO.
Story cards are short, past-tense phrases. Read them as written, filling in the blanks (indicated by green text in brackets). The Storyteller may replace pronouns (underlined, in red) with any pronoun they like.
Fib cards just say the word “Fib.” Make up a phrase that sounds like it could be a story card! The Storyteller may play any amount of Fib cards (none, one, two, or all three)!
––––– 3 –––––
The Storyteller reads their story out loud to the group. Dramatic delivery is encouraged!
Storytellers, remember your Fibs! The group can collectively ask you to repeat your story, but only once.
Then, popcorn style (no order), each audience member says either “Pass” or “Fib.”
Whoever says “Fib” must identify which card they think was a Fib (the first, second, or third card):
-
- If they guess correctly, the Storyteller hands over that Fib card as a point.
- If they guess wrong, the Storyteller gets to keep that story card as a point.
Points are kept in a points pile, face-down.
Audience members may call “Fib” more than once! However, they can only accuse one card at a time.
The round ends once everyone has said “Pass,” or after all three cards have been accused.
––––– 4 –––––
Once the round is over, if any Fib cards remain in the Storyboard, the Storyteller keeps those Fib cards as points. Congrats, you Fibbed successfully!
Any story cards remaining in the Storyboard after all players have said “Pass” are either discarded or stolen, if the Storyteller is willing to take the risk…
Thieving is when the Storyteller claims one or more story cards as points, pretending they Fibbed successfully. Yes, you can steal points! But be warned: before the next Storyteller begins telling their story, anybody can call “Thief!”
If Thief is called, the last Storyteller must flip over the cards they just claimed after their round ended.
-
- If the exposed cards are Fibs (they didn’t steal), whoever called “Thief” gets their next turn skipped as the Storyteller.
- If any of the exposed cards are story cards, the Thief must discard all the points they’ve earned in the game so far! Yep, back to zero.
––––– 5 –––––
The Storyboard is passed clockwise to the next player. The previous Storyteller draws three new cards (always returning to a hand of five cards), and a new story begins.
The first player to win or steal eleven points (or whoever has the most points when you decide to stop) wins the game!
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Can I lie when someone calls Fib?
No, you have to be honest! Fess up and hand over that Fib card.
You can only steal points once everyone has said “Pass.” - Do the stories and Fibs have to be based on real life?
No, these are all made up stories! The game has nothing to do with your personal life.
Think of it like improv: Silly, irreverent, and totally random. - Can I replace pronouns in red with proper nouns or names?
No, you have to use a pronoun (he, she, they, we, our, etc.)
Forms of “to be” (was, were, are, etc.) are modifiable when necessary - Are cards with green prompts story cards or Fib cards?
Those are story cards that ask you to make something up where indicated. They’re meant to sound like Fibs and throw people off! Fib cards just say “Fib”. - Can I play a Fib card and say something that’s actually on a story card?
Go for it! That’s exactly the kind of mischief we encourage. It’s a great way to fool someone who has played a bunch.
